The Black Hole of Cancelled Lesbian Series’
Nearly every women-loving-women show (when one of the main characters is a queer woman) ends up one of two ways (or maybe I’m just becoming increasingly pessimistic). Either,
- One of the lesbians/bi women dies in the end, usually at the peak of the couple’s happiness (I’m looking at you, The Haunting of Bly Manor, The 100, and Killing Eve).
- The show gets cancelled — usually on a cliff-hanger.
Okay, maybe there are some happy endings out there. Like Piper and Alex in Orange is the New Black, Emily and Sue in Dickinson, and Casey and Izzie in Atypical.
But this is a rant article, so I’m not going to focus on happy things. Instead, I’m drawing attention to streaming services such as HBO, Amazon Prime, and Netflix for cancelling beloved lesbian shows when we already struggle to get decent representation.
More happily-ever-after endings would be nice, too, but as the entertainment industry is apparently full of sadists, I won’t even try.
The Wilds
Consider this one “the straw that broke the camel’s back.”
I got the news just a few days ago: The Wilds, a popular Amazon Prime show, was cancelled shortly after its second season was released.
